A life at sea inevitably includes a close acquaintance with all sorts of weather and many types of fauna but in South Georgia the sheer abundance of nature in all its magnificence is staggering, and humbling. In Gold Harbour we were privileged to walk amongst huge colonies of King penguins and rockhoppers, accompanied by herds of very excited fur seals. With so little human contact, everyone was amazed by how tame the animals were; anyone standing still for more than a few minutes would soon be greeted by penguins, free of fear, waddling up to say hello!
Utterly remote, almost free from the destroying hand of mankind, and full to the brim of wildlife, few places on Earth can rival South Georgia. Opportunities to study the area are limited, but HMS ENTERPRISE was honoured to able to make a small contribution to our understanding of life in the area.
There is so much more to do.”
