An encrypted initialization rite of the mafia

Seven years ago I blogged about an encrypted message from the Mafia. Blog reader Flavio Reato has now provided me with new information about this cryptogram. These provide interesting insights into an initialization rite of the criminal organization.

Deutsche Version

While investigating a Mafia murder, Italian police came across a coded message in January 2013. It was a handwritten text that filled three pages. The police put two crossword-enthusiastic colleagues onto the cryptogram, who quickly succeeded and delivered the plaintext. What emerged was a description of the initialization rite of the Calabrian Mafia arm ‘Ndrangheta.

It was not until a year after the cryptogram was found that the public was informed. When this story broke in the press in 2014, I blogged about it. Unfortunately, I was only able to present two excerpts from the Mafia cryptogram at the time. Nothing more could be found online. Here is the first excerpt:

Since the police had not revealed the method used and the plaintext, I asked my readers if they could decipher the text. Armin Krauß, who still reads my blog, had no trouble. As it turned out, the mobsters had used a simple letter substitution (MASC).

I also asked my readers if more excerpts from the cryptogram could be found. Unfortunately, I did not receive an answer at first.

Flavio Reato’s decryption

But as we all know, the Internet forgets nothing, and my Cipherbrain blog certainly nothing. So I was happy when I received an e-mail from blog reader Flavio Reato a few days ago.

Flavio (born 1956) is a computer scientist specializing in “Internet Security & Privacy”. He comes from Venice, is an Italian citizen and lives in Austria.

Flavio actually found more parts of the Mafia cryptogram on the Internet and thankfully decrypted, transcribed and partially translated them. He was also able to provide me with the key:

Content and translation

As mentioned above, the text describes an initialization rite of the Mafia. More precisely, it is the incipit of the “Codice di San Luca”, the rite of affiliation with the ‘Ndrangheta. Flavio translated the beginning of it:

One beautiful morning on Holy Saturday, when the sun was rising and not rising, as I was walking along the coast, I found a boat with three old sailors standing by it, who asked me what I was looking for. I answered, “Blood and honor.” They told me to follow them so I would find it. We sailed for three days and three nights until we reached the belly of the island of Favignana. There on my right I passed a castle where two lions were chained to a chain of twenty-four links and with me a twenty-five, later I noticed that there was a very beautiful marble staircase with twenty-four steps and with me a twenty-five at the top of this staircase on my right I found three rooms. I entered the first and found an old man with a beard it was St. Michael the Archangel. I entered the second room and found a woman dressed all in black was our holy sister Elizabeth I went into the third room where there was a box of fine walnut. I opened it and found a dagger inside and there I swore eternal allegiance to the venerated society.

A riddle

First of all, I would like to thank Flavio Reato for this great information. It makes me happy to know that some questions to my readers are not forgotten even after seven years.

Finally, there is a little riddle. In an Italian newspaper article, the following mafia cryptogram is presented.
