2022: A conference year like never before
More events on crypto history are planned for 2022 than there have ever been in a single year. A Voynich Manuscript Conference is also planned for the first time in ten years.
Almost ten years ago, an interesting conference took place near Rome: the “Voynich 100”. It was by far the largest and most comprehensive event to date on the Voynich Manuscript, the famous encrypted book that most readers are likely to know. This conference was organized by Claudio Foti, René Zandbergen and Michelle Smith. I made a video at that time that gives an impression:
René Zandbergen has now informed me that another Voynich Manuscript Conference is to take place in November or December 2022. This is to be an online-only event organized by the University of Malta. Anyone who wants to can submit a paper. I will do so in any case.
ICCH talks
Speaking of online conferences: ICCH, where I have presented quite a few times, also has some interesting events on the agenda. This coming Sunday, Jason Fagone, a US writer, will be presenting on cryptologist Elizebeth Friedman. I met Jason once and of course have read his book about Elizebeth Friedman – absolutely recommended.
Then on May 15, it’s my turn again: at the ICCH Forum, I’ll be giving a talk with the tongue-in-cheek title “How to become a cyber criminal”.
As always, ICCH talks take place online, and attendance is free. The access link will be sent via the associated mailing list. Those who have not subscribed to it can get the link from me.
The cryptovision Mindshare
My said ICCH talk is also a dress rehearsal for a presentation with similar content that I will give a few days later at the cryptovision Mindshare (May 19-20, 2022). Mindshare is my employer’s in-house exhibition and conference. It does not take place online, but live in Gelsenkirchen. Participation is free and open to everyone.
I will also give a talk on post-quantum cryptography at Mindshare as an introduction. In addition, I am supporting several colleagues in the conception of their talks. I can already reveal that we have come up with some curiosities.
Also joining us at Mindshare will be my friends Marc Simons and Paul Reuvers from the Cryptomuseum. They will present an Enigma and other encryption machines from their collection. In addition, Marc and Paul will give a presentation on “Operation Rubikon”.
All this will only be topped by the legendary Mindshare party, which will take place on the evening of the first day.
The NSA Symposium
The week before Mindshare, the NSA Symposium on Cryptologic History will take place. This most important conference on crypto history was supposed to have been held last year in October as an in-person event. However, thanks to Corona, it was postponed and is now being held online. This could be a unique opportunity to experience the NSA Symposium without having to travel to the US.
I will give two lectures at the symposium. One of them (about the parapsychological experiments of Robert Thouless) I will give together with Elonka Dunin. The other one deals with the ciphers of the Red Army Faction (RAF).
The HistoCrypt
From June 20 to 22 I will continue with the HistoCrypt in Amsterdam. This is to be held locally.
As head of the Steering Committee (I hope I can hand over this office soon), I was unfortunately not allowed to submit a presentation. Instead, I have the dubious honor of moderating the Business Meeting, where things can get quite heated.
A conference year like never before
All in all, we are in for a conference year like never before.
I would then like to point out my presentation at the Spy Museum in Berlin, which will take place on June 2, 2022.
By the way, an overview of my talks can be found here. I would be happy to meet readers of my blog on one or the other occasion.
