Who can decipher these encrypted diaries?
Some users have presented their encrypted diaries on Twitter. Most of them should not be difficult to decipher.
I have often reported about encrypted diaries on Cipherbrain. For example, a few weeks ago I blogged about such encrypted diaries that were excerpted by their authors on Reddit. Blog reader Yefim Shifrin cracked some of them.
Crypto diary show on Twitter
Blog reader Tobias Schrödel, whom I’m sure my readers have long known as a comedy hacker, TV pundit and crypto-book expert, has now alerted me to a series of Twitter messages with a similar theme. On December 7, 2022, a certain journaling tweeted about his encrypted diary and asked if others also protected their daily entries from fellow readers in this way.
Surprisingly, quite a few responded and also sent photos of their encrypted diaries. I will present three of them in the following. If you feel like it, you can try to solve these cryptograms.
RICEGENOClDE diary
Twitter user RICEGENOClDE posted the following photo:
The cipher used is reminiscent of a runic script. Probably a simple letter substitution is behind it. The four book pages shown should be enough to crack the encryption.
Roachtoom diary
Roachtoom, another Twitter user, apparently keeps a diary that looks like this:
Again, I would guess a letter substitution.
gacha_ive-NSFW-Diary
Another Twitter user posted the following photo:
The second section begins with a one-letter word. In an English-language diary, this could stand for “I.” However, the plain text could also be from another language.
Conclusion
Of course I will add these three diaries to my Encrypted-Book-List. There are a lot of diaries of newer date. It is amazing that even in the age of computers there are still many people who keep an encrypted diary by hand. However, this is not particularly secure, because manual encryption methods that are practicable for a diary can easily be cracked. Let’s see if this is possible with the examples presented today.
