This page is about a secret writing system that was used between Ferdinand III. and his brother Leopold Wilhelm in 1640. This encryption method has not been broken yet.

The Encryption System

Most encryption methods of the 17th century are nomenclators. This means: There is a codegroup (e.g. a number or a letter combination) for every letter of the alphabet; in addition, some words have their own codegroups. Some nomenclators include nulls (codegroups without a meaning) and homophones (several codegroups with the same meaning, mainly used for frequent letters). Most nomenclators of the 17th century are poorly constructed. Some make an obvious distinction between letters and words (e.g. letters from 1 to 99, words from 100 to 999). Even a destinction between vowels and consonants is quite common. Properties like these make it easier for the recepient to decrypt a message but they also make the method less secure.
In the case of Ferdinand III.’s secret writing the ciphertext is consistent with a 17th century nomenclator. The characters always show up in pairs. My guess is that every pair is a codegroup. Each character is chosen from an alphabet consisting of the numbers from 0 to 9 and about 27 symbols. In some parts of the ciphertext no symbols are used. A possible explanation for this is the following: Pairs (i.e. codegroups) consisting of numbers only represent characters (including nulls and homophones), while pairs containing symbols represent words. Based on this hypothesis the following should be checked: Does a frequency analysis of the number-only pairs reveal anything? Is there an order in the number-only pairs (for instance a possible separation between vowels and consonants)?

    Das stimmt. Aber was machen dann die ~27 anderen Zeichen für einen Sinn? Und warum ist überhaupt nicht alles in dieser Geheimschrift geschrieben?

    Übrigens, die Kombinationen 4F und IJ müssen jeweils entweder für m oder s stehen, sollte ein Bigramm einen Buchstaben ausmachen. nach “ad” steht nämlich immer Akkusativ und die beiden lat. Endungen für diesen Fall sind entweder -um/am/em oder -as/os/es/. Im Neutrum Plural kann zwar auch a am Ende eines Wortes stehen, aber da a der zweithäufigste Buchstabe im lateinischen ist und IJ bzw. 4F nur seltener vorkommen, denke ich nicht, dass das hier der Fall ist.

    Tu das. 🙂 Dann beschränke ich mich auf das bisschen, das ich eben entziffert habe, auf S.1 oberhalb der Mitte lese ich:

    terrent, non ite …

    Ich lese eher “ferrent” bzw. “scripsi” (scripti kann eigentlich nicht sein), siehe “Considerationes” (=Anschauungen)
    in Z.6 und statt “me” “ire”. “vestigia ferre” könnte “Weg einschlagen” oder ähnliches, ich kenne nur die Wendung “vestigia referre” = zurückgehen. Allerdings ergibt der Text nicht viel Sinn…
    “hoc scripsi” ist ein ablativus absolutus und heißt “nachdem/weil ich dies geschrieben habe”
    vestigia ferrent ist ein PPA, also “gehend/während sie gehen”
    non ite = geht nicht.
    Ein sinnvoller Satz allerdings lässt sich daraus nicht kombinieren.
