Who can solve this cryptogram from a cartoon series?
In the US animated series “Vulo Lives” a strange sequence of numbers can be heard. Despite extensive online discussions, no one has been able to figure out its meaning. Can a reader help?
I have often reported on movies and TV series that feature a coded or hidden message. The best known is probably the cryptogram in the Hollywood feature film “Fair Game”, which is still unsolved.
Bradley Hector has now thankfully alerted me to another crypto puzzle of this type. Bradley first asked the NSA Museum at Fort Meade (USA) for advice, where his query ended up with Robert Simpson. Robert then forwarded the request to me, since no one at the NSA Museum could help.
The Vulo-Lives cryptogram
This is about the somewhat unconventional US animated series “Vulo Lives”, which was initially distributed on Twitch. It was created by Jason Steele and the artist Scuffy. On Twitch (as usual there) most of the episodes have disappeared in the meantime, but there they are available on YouTube. There, at least, almost 50,000 people have watched “Vulo Lives” in the meantime. Here is one of the episodes:
The series’ curious plot revolves around a certain Vulo, who borrows the faces of others. In one episode, he borrows the face of a cat woman named Christine. The latter has a fondness for the breakfast cereal Quisp (this brand really exists), and since Vulo uses her face, he now also has a weakness for it. Unfortunately, a thief keeps stealing the cereal from him, but promises to return the loot if Vulo watches a series of Garfield comics (“All Garf”).
The “All Garf” series actually exists on said Twitch channel. It began on April 1, 2022, and a new episode has been released almost every Monday since then. The cereal thief regularly leaves messages of some kind. On May 30, 2022, he gave a series of numbers in a voice message:
While there are different interpretations of this message, most hear the following sequence of numbers:
7160 3927 312861 09646 106666651010 6521007 6128228807
Some Vulo Lives viewers suspect that the creators of the series will do something when the solution to this cryptogram is found.
Possible solutions
There has been a lot of guesswork among fans of the series on the question of what this sequence of numbers means. There is a discussion forum about it on Reddit, while the comments on Twitch with the videos have probably disappeared again.
One suggestion is that the code might have something to do with the release dates of certain Garfield volumes or words in them. However, these considerations did not lead to success.
Another Vulo supporter tried scytale transformations, binary numbers and ASCII code, but also without success.
Or is a simple Caesar cipher behind it? So-called decoder rings, which realize a Caesar cipher, used to be enclosed as toys in cereal boxes (the following picture shows a similar ring, which was available as an addition to Ovaltine drink powder).
There were even Quisp decoder rings. Bradley Hector has emailed Quaker Oats, the company that makes Quisp, but has not yet received a response.
Can any reader say more about this number cryptogram? Bradley Hector has already put some effort into this and would appreciate any leads.
