Around 1990 David Kahn, the father of crypto history, met a tall man wearing a suit and glasses. This is documented on a photograph. Does anybody recognize this man?
Rene Stein from the National Cryptologic Museum in Fort Meade, MD, has recently sent me a mail. She wrote: “We found this photo in David Kahn’s collection and are trying to identify the other person in the photo. Do you recognize him? I know I have seen this picture before but I can’t remember who he is.”
The man on the left is David Kahn, the grand seigneur of crypto history and author of the groundbreaking book The Codebreakers. Unfortunately, David (he was born in 1930) is seriously ill and doesn’t answer enquiries any more.
David spent several years of his life in Germany doing research for his PHD thesis and his books. It is well possible that the person on the photograph is German. I asked a couple of friends, but none of them recognized this man. He could be a professor, a contemporary whitness or a crypto entrepreneur. I don’t think he is a crypto expert, otherwise somebody would have recognized him.
If you know who the man on the photograph is, please let me know.
