Two encrypted postcards from 1908 and 1910
Today it’s again about two coded messages sent by young men to their lovers. Can my readers unravel the love mystery?
Thanks to Google, today I can once again present two encrypted postcards that I found in the vastness of the Internet. For the sake of balance, one is from England and the other from the USA.
From Echo Park to Eugene (1908)
Let’s start with the US postcard. It comes from the value calculation portal Worthpoint, where I have found interesting content before. The picture side shows a motif from Echo Park, a district of Los Angeles (California):
The text page is clearly more interesting:
The postmark shows the year 1908. The recipient was a Miss Pearl La Porte in Eugene (Oregon). Presumably, Miss La Porte was the sender’s mistress. Cipherbrain readers know that most encoded postcards were sent as love letters from a young man to his beloved.
The message is encrypted in a variant of the Pigpen cipher. Can a reader crack it? My first impression is that it should be quite easy.
From somewhere to Swanage (1910)
I found the English postcard via the PicClick search page on eBay. Unfortunately, the resolution is plenty low, but I don’t have a better version. Let’s start with the picture side. Unfortunately, the photo is so small that I can’t even read the caption:
The text side is a little clearer:
The recipient is again an unmarried lady (Miss) and was probably the sender’s mistress. She lived in Swanage on the English Channel, apparently at the police station. The postmark shows the year 1910.
The cipher in this case is not a Pigpen cipher, but another cipher. Can a reader solve it?
If you want to add a comment, you need to add it to the German version here.
