Das ist die Krypto-Sensation des Jahrzehnts: Die seit 51 Jahren ungelöste zweite Nachricht des Zodiac-Killers wurde von Lesern dieses Blogs dechiffriert.

Ja, es gibt mal wieder etwas Deutsches auf diesem Blog. Der folgende Artikel basiert auf einer Pressemitteilung, die ich gestern verschickt habe und die ich nicht auch noch übersetzen möchte. Wer englischsprachige Informationen sucht, findet sie beispielsweise bei Nick Pelling. Ein Link zu einer maschinellen Übersetzung dieses Artikels (mit Deepl) ist oben angegeben.

Und ja, eines der bedeutendsten ungelösten Rätsel der Kryptografie-Geschichte ist gelöst! Danke an die vielen Leser, die mich darauf aufmerksam gemacht haben.

 

Wer war der Zodiac-Killer?

Der Zodiac-Killer tötete 1968 und 1969 mindestens fünf Menschen im Raum San Francisco. Zwei weitere Opfer wurden schwer verletzt. Trotz intensiver Fahndungsmaßnahmen konnte die Polizei den Täter nie ermitteln.

Ich habe bereits öfters über diesen Fall geschrieben (unter anderem in meinem Buch Nicht zu knacken) und vorgetragen. Zur Illustration habe ich ein paar Lego-Modelle geschaffen und fotografiert. Das folgende Bild zeigt die Tat des Zodiac-Killers am 27. September 1969 am Lake Berryessa, bei der eine Frau getötet und ein Mann schwer verletzt wurde:

Welche Taten verübte der Zodiac-Killer?

Man kann dem Zodiac-Killer vier Taten sicher zuordnen:

  • 20. Dezember 1968: Der Zodiac tötet die 16-jährige Betty Lou Jensen und ihren 17-jähriger Freund David Faraday in Vallejo, nördlich von San Francisco.

  • 4. Juli 1969: Der Zodiac tötet die 22-jährige Kellnerin Darlene Ferrin auf einem Parkplatz in Benicia. Ihr 19-jähriger Begleiter Michael Mageau überlebt schwer verletzt.
  • 27. September 1969: In einem Park am Lake Berryessa tötet ein schwarz kostümierter Mann die 22-jährige Cecelia Shepard und verletzt ihren 20-jährigen Freund Bryan Hartnell schwer.
  • 11. Oktober 1969: Der Taxifahrer Paul Stine wird in seinem Taxi vom Zodiac-Killer erschossen.

Ob der Zodiac-Killer weitere Taten begangen hat, ist unklar. Es gibt mehrere unaufgeklärte Morde und Mordversuche, bei denen zumindest nicht ausgeschlossen ist, dass der Zodiac-Killer etwas damit zu tun hatte.

 

Was ist Z340?

Der Zodiac-Killer schickte zahreiche anonyme Briefe an die regionale Presse, in denen er sich seiner Taten brüstete und die Polizei verhöhnte. Vier seiner Briefe enthielten verschlüsselte Botschaften. Die folgende Grafik (aus meinem Buch Nicht zu knacken) zeigt, wann die Morde passierten und wann die Briefe verschickt wurden:

Die erste verschlüsselte Zodiac-Botschaft (408 Buchstaben, im Bild als “Zodiak-408” bezeichnet) wurde innerhalb von Tagen von einem Lehrerehepaar gelöst. Der Klartext lautet:

I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN IT IS MORE FUN THAN KILLING WILD GAME IN THE FORREST BECAUSE MAN IS THE MOST DANGEROUE ANAMAL OF ALL TO KILL SOMETHING GIVES ME THE MOST THRILLING EXPERENCE IT IS EVEN BETTER THAN GETTING YOUR ROCKS OFF WITH A GIRL THE BEST PART OF IT IS THAE WHEN I DIE I WILL BE REBORN IN PARADICE AND THEI HAVE KILLED WILL BECOME MY SLAVES I WILL NOT GIVE YOU MY NAME BECAUSE YOU WILL TRY TO SLOI DOWN OR ATOP MY COLLECTIOG OF SLAVES FOR MY AFTERLIFE EBEORIETEMETHHPITI

Leider brachte dieser Dechiffrier-Erfolg die Polizei nicht weiter.

Die dritte und die vierte verschlüsselte Nachricht (13 bzw. 32 Buchstaben) sind recht kurz und dürften daher kaum lösbar sein. So ruhte die Hoffnung über Jahrzehnte hinweg auf der zweiten verschlüsselten Botschaft des Killers, die nach der Zahl der enthaltenen Buchstaben als Z340 oder Zodiak-340 bezeichnet wird.

An Z340 bissen sich 50 Jahrzehnte lang unzählige Codeknacker in aller Welt die Zähne aus. Auf meiner Liste der 50 bedeutendsten ungelösten Verschlüsselungen steht dieses Kryptogramm auf Platz 2.

 

Wie wurde Z340 gelöst?

Am 11. Dezember 2020 verbreitete sich eine sensationelle Nachricht: Z340, die zweite Nachricht des Zodiac-Killers, ist geknackt. Ein Team von drei Computerexperten konnte diesen Erfolg vermelden. Das folgende Video der drei Codeknacker erklärt, wie die Verschlüsselung funktioniert:

Das FBI prüfte die Lösung und bestätigte, dass diese Sinn ergab.

Es zeigte sich, dass der Zodiac-Killer zwei Verschlüsselungsmethoden nacheinander angewendet hatte. Zum einen ersetzte er jeden Buchstaben des Klartexts durch ein Symbol. Für die häufigen Buchstaben, insbesondere das E, verwendete er nicht immer das gleiche Symbol, sondern wählte eines von mehreren aus. Dies bezeichnet man als homophone Chiffre. Der Vorteil für den Nutzer ist, dass ein Codeknacker nicht ohne Weiteres aus den Symbolhäufigkeiten auf deren Bedeutung schließen kann. Schon die erste Zodiac-Nachricht war auf diese Weise verschlüsselt.

Die zweite Methode, die der Zodiac-Killer anwendete, ist das Umordnen der Buchstaben im Text (Transpositionschiffre). Er teilte die Nachricht in drei Teile auf und ordnete jeden Teil so um, dass die korrekte Reihenfolge im Rösselsprung-Verfahren (zwei vor, eins quer) ausgelesen werden kann.

Durch die Kombination eines homophonen Verschlüsselungsverfahrens mit einem Transpositionsverfahren war die resultierende Nachricht extrem schwer zu lösen.

 

Wie lautet der Klartext

Die drei erfolgreichen Codeknacker ermittelten folgenden Klartext:

I HOPE YOU ARE HAVING LOTS OF FUN IN TRYING TO CATCH ME  THAT WASN’T ME ON THE TV SHOW  WHICH BRINGS UP A POINT ABOUT ME  I AM NOT AFRAID OF THE GAS CHAMBER BECAUSE IT WILL SEND ME TO PARADICE ALL THE SOONER BECAUSE I NOW HAVE ENOUGH SLAVES TO WORK FOR ME WHERE EVERYONE ELSE HAS NOTHING WHEN THEY REACH PARADICE SO THEY ARE AFRAID OF DEATH  I AM NOT AFRAID BECAUSE I KNOW THAT MY NEW LIFE WILL BE AN EASY ONE IN PARADICE DEATH

Leider enthalten diese Zeilen keine Angaben, die unmittelbar auf die Identität des Zodiac-Killers schließen lassen.

 

Wer hat Z340 gelöst?

Für den Erfolg zeichnen drei Computerexperten verantwortlich, die zusammengearbeitet haben:

  • David Oranchak: Der Software-Entwickler aus Roanoke im US-Bundesstaat Virginia ist ein Leser dieses Blogs. Er gilt seit Jahren als weltweit führender Experte für die Verschlüsselungen des Zodiac-Killers. Ich habe ihn 2014 interviewt.

  • Jarl Van Eycke: Der belgische Software-Entwickler ist ebenfalls ein Leser dieses Blogs. Jarl hat sich in den letzten Namen mit einigen spektakulären Dechiffrier-Erfolgen einen Namen gemacht. Unter anderem knackte er zusammen mit Louie Helm zwei schwierige Digraph-Challenges, die ich für diesen Blog erstellt habe, und stellte damit neue Weltrekorde auf.

  • Sam Blake: Der australische Mathematiker war bisher nicht in der Krypto-Szene aktiv.

Die Lösung von Z340 war Team-Arbeit. Jarl Van Eycke ist einer der weltweit führenden Spezialisten für homophone Verschlüsselungen. Sein Programm AZDecrypt lieferte aber keine Lösung zu Z340. Erst als Sam Blake mit einer von ihm entwickelten Software Hunderttausende von Buchstabenumstellungen (Transpositionen) durchprobierte und jede mit AZDecrypt untersuchte, kam der Durchbruch. David Oranchak, der als Zodiac-Killer-Experte die Arbeit koordinierte, erkannte sinnvolle Wörter in den Ergebnissen. So ließ sich schließlich die richtige Transpositionsmethode ermitteln.

 

Sind damit alle Krypto-Rätsel um den Zodiac-Killer gelöst?

Nein. Zwei der verschlüsselten Zodiac-Botschaften sind noch ungelöst, und zwar Z13 …

… und Z32:

Es gab zudem mehrere Zodiac-Trittbrettfahrer, die ähnliche verschlüsselte Nachrichten versendeten.

Davon abgesehen sind einige weitere ungelöste verschlüsselte Botschaften bekannt, die mit einem ungelösten Kriminalfall in Verbindung stehen.

 

Wie kann ich ebenfalls ungelöste Verschlüsselungen knacken?

Verschlüsselte Texte, die noch ungelöst sind, werden auf diesem Blog in großer Zahl vorgestellt. Seit ein paar Tagen gibt es auch ein Buch von mir (geschrieben mit Elonka Dunin), das die wichtigsten Methoden zum Lösen vorstellt: Codebreaking: A Practical Guide. Leider ist es nur auf Englisch verfügbar.

    Tolle Leistung, nach 51 Jahren endlich gelöst. Gratulation.

    Leider enthält der Brief wie erwartet keine neuen Informationen. Viel wichtiger wäre es, wenn der Fall aufgeklärt werden würde. Die noch ungelösten Teile werden wohl nicht lösbar sein, da hier einfach zu wenige Zeichen für die Analyse zur Verfügung stehen. Oder der Schlüssel von Z340 passt auch bei den noch ungelösten Teilen, aber das wurde ja mit Sicherheit nach dem Durchbruch direkt ausprobiert.

    Do you really thing, that Zodiac made so sophisticated cipher, hard to crack to tell us nothink. In this solution there are No informations about him, informations about another victims he killed or some clues to catch him. In his standard letters is more to find out about him.

    When I first read about this I was very sceptical (I mean remember the last solution that was essentially the Bible code?). The way they described it in the article it sounded like they were just jumping around and choosing random letters to decrypt.

    Having seen the video, I’m impressed. And also a bit jealous 😉

    What surprises me is that the last line makes sense. I always assumed it would be gibberish like in the 340 message, because of the signature in it.

    Personally, based on nothing but guessing, I suspect the text should be “MY NEW LIFE IS DEATH. LIFE WILL BE AN EASY ONE IN PARADICE”.

    Imagine my surprise that once again Dave Oranchek has the answer to life’s greatest mystery….

    Then again not a single word of critique by the FBI’s CRRU or a single word from Oranchek about the ciphers I spoke about breaking before he ever tried to work his way to the podium explaining that he couldn’t break them and was considering “When to stop trying” to break the ciphers in his discussions.

    He explained that they were created by an amateur when discussing Bauer’s solves…now it is a professional that has a massive understanding of ciphers and cryptography?

    He neither addresses a hint or guide in the ciphers that lead him to breaking down the structure, nor does he take consideration of the last 18 letters of the Z408. No he fixates on something he saw in the movies that makes him think more in that direction…..is this the right way to break a cipher?

    For my work in solving the mystery I can safely say that they are planning to destroy the amount of public awareness, mass of progress made in research, creating another series hosted in the same fashion as before, and that they want to take advantage of the window of opportunity to discredit other research simply by acting as if there is no other possibility other than the so-called Team that solved the case.

    The media on one side is claiming an Australian solved the case and the other side posting Orancheck as the winner of the prize…seen a dozen of these articles so far and it is somewhat incomplete on their own, as the Australian is said to be the creator of the same program that Oranchek used before in creating a letter substitution software to use to crack the cipher and Oranchek is claiming that he did the legwork of the solving of the cipher. How a team is involved is beyond me as Dave has taken the initiative and explained in detail the methods he alone used.

    When you are Bumper Locked by the FBI agents in Vermont following you to your home and told that they “heard all about it in the office” you tend to realize that they are not willing to move their body of law into investigating these crimes. So be it…they need a way to cover up their own involvement in these cases and want to endorse a “Professional”, but they instead dress the case that an “Amateur” team has solved the case.

    They were pretty assertive that they were in the know then, and that was 2018/19 when I talked with them last.

    My report to the Chicago Courts Clerk Office spawned an official inquiry into the affairs of the Zodiac being also the same person as the Barefoot Intruder, and The Vallejo PD has my back on the solve and the suspects, that’s right, two main suspects, not just the one that “Doesn’t want to go to the Gas Chamber” calling himself Sam, which of course was a fabrication of the Movie starring Robert Downey Jr. The real phone call to the TV Station was documented here word for word:

    Oranchek can’t fact check? The Zodiac NEVER said he was afraid that he didn’t want to go to the Gas Chamber…..but since Dave was using that as reinforcement that he was onto a correct solve I took notice of the undertones and the attempt to assert his solve was themed correctly, moving forwards based on his attempt to convince us that this was the authentic narrative the Zodiac uses. It was more dressed like the Z408 was than holding its own unique message and cipher.

    Why would the Zodiac repeat himself….not one of the other letters was repeating the same message throughout in any way?

    Only Dave has tried to assert the same thing over and over again, and that is an improperly asserted assumption reinforced with an “authority” as his backing, from a group that is well known to not be trusted wholeheartedly for their statements….

    bedurft, zu bemerken, daß er nach der Gaskammer
    im “Paradies” der Sklave des Henkers sein würde!

    The common understanding about the misspellings is that the words that are incorrect are usually segregated and then moved into their own graphs, generally denoted by the letter counts of the first word used.

    One of his other ciphers explained this later on in the Dear Channel 9 Letter: where the numerous added dots and slash marks showed the constellations are mapped behind the veil of the letter itself….the stars are aligned to reveal the Zodiac Symbol would then fit into the position of a Constellation/Star, known as Officina Typographica in Urania’s Book on the Constellations. In this older book of drawings, in the background behind Unicorns and other images, there is an Artist’s Aisle, showing a piece of paper is added to the board with a grid on it. So the interpretation I found solid was to Graph the Typographs or Work a Typograph from the words Officina Typographica.

    Doing so in a 9×9 graph with the number shown, “9”, in the title then reveals a clear message from the confinement of these misspelled words for that letter and reveals the nature of the operations.

    Likewise these words can be found throughout the other ciphers and letters consistently, showing that they are intentionally misspelled, reinforced by the fact that the ciphers were compiled with a degree of knowledge of cryptography that would be found used by a master of this field.

    If this is something that is overlooked, a part of that cipher is not fully understood, nor can a motive be formed showing the professional nature of its design, instead it is intentionally used to deceive investigators into forming the profile of an “illiterate” or amateur. To follow that line of thinking in breaking the cipher is the part that is called a ‘dupe’ or ‘the slant’. Taking the Bait.

    These serious additions to a cipher are never truly overlooked by others and the nature of that being a part of a legitimate secondary message can be attributed to the cunning used to conceal the message and the reasoning behind its inclusion. There is also something more than accidental noticed by others as well online, so there is a general understanding about them being legitimately important and a pattern of behavior in the use of them.

    To take consideration of these is professional, to ignore them is amateur, and I can only assume what is happening is attributed to the investigations showing that the FBI is complicit, showing a state of Deliberate Indifference is shown by numerous parties in their ease of acceptance of this answer.

    I would offer more advice in this case but I sometimes feel that there is no interest in seeing these results.

    Just FYI – you mixed sth up about the murder at Lake Berryessa on September 27th: in the first paragraph it says that a man was killed and the woman was severely injured. Later, it says the woman was killed.
