Um das Jahr 1908 schickte eine unbekannte Person eine verschlüsselte Postkarte von Pennsylvania nach Kansas. Kann ein Leser sie entschlüsseln?

Zunächst einmal möchte ich erwähnen, dass Richard SantaColoma einen Blog-Artikel über das Voynich-Manuskript verfasst hat. Es geht um die vieldiskutierte Frage, ob das bekannte Manuskript eine Fälschung ist, die Wilfried Voynich selbst vor gut 100 Jahren angefertigt hat.

Auch Nils Kopal hat wieder etwas veröffentlicht. Er berichtet auf seinem Youtube-Kanal über die wichtigsten Vorträge der diesjährigen HistoCrypt. Wem mein siebenminütiges Video zur HistoCrypt nicht ausführlich genug war, sollte sich das ansehen:

Schon vor ein paar Wochen hat mich Christian Baumann auf eine Software aufmerksam gemacht, die er entwickelt hat. Es handelt sich um einen Faktorisierer, also um ein Programm, das ein Primzahlprodukt in seine Faktoren zerlegt. Mit einem Faktorisierer kann man das RSA-Verfahren knacken, mit dem beispielsweise der österreichische Terrorist Franz Fuchs gearbeitet hat.

Auch George Lasry war nicht untätig, worauf ich in den nächsten Tagen in einem eigenen Artikel eingehen will.

 

Eine verschlüsselte Postkarte

Und dann kam noch ein Hinweis von Gerry Haynaly. Er machte mich drauf aufmerksam, dass auf eBay mal wieder eine verschlüsselte Postkarte angeboten wurde. Darüber blogge ich natürlich gerne. Fangen wir mit der Bildseite an:

Das Motiv zeigt ein Waldstück bei Scranton im US-Bundesstaat Pennsylvania. Scranton liegt 70 Kilometer nördlich von Allentown, das man hierzulande vor allem durch ein Lied von Billy Joel kennt. Außerdem ist New York City nicht weit – knapp 100 Kilometer in südöstlicher Richtung. Den Moosie Lake, der hier genannt wird, konnte ich allerdings nirgends finden.

Abgestempelt wurde die Karte in Shohola, einem Dorf in der Nähe von Scranton. Wenn ich es richtig sehe, ist der Empfänger ein Mann namens John F. Wells, was darauf hindeutet, dass die Karte von einer Frau geschrieben wurde. John F. Wells lebte in Geneseo, einem Dorf in Kansas.

Die Jahreszahl auf dem Stempel lautet 190X, wobei ich die letzte Ziffer leider nicht lesen kann. Laut der eBay-Seite wurde diese Karte zwischen 1907 und 1914 hergestellt. Da der untere Teil der Ziffer als rund erkennbar ist, würde ich auf 1908 oder 1909 tippen.

Das verwendete Verschlüsselungsverfahren ist wahrscheinlich eine einfache Buchstaben-Ersetzung. Kann ein Leser den Klartext ermitteln?

    Scranton wird jedem Serienfan von „The Office“ etwas sagen. Es ist der Ort in dem die Serie um die Papierverkäufer von Dunder Mifflin spielt. Falls du es noch nicht gesehen hast … tu es!

    Danke für den Hinweis. Ich habe mal eine Folge von “The Office” angeschaut, war aber nicht so begeistert. Vielleicht sollte ich einen zweiten Versuch wagen.

    Bottom right hand line of the cipher says TYPOS in plaintext

    It is underlined as well so as to add to the text, and holds a section that is underlined and read when rotated to the right. This is the classic use of an Old English Box Cipher from BOZO…..Herbert Osborne Yardley.

    Numerous other ciphers are found behind the keys that are added to this basic single alphabetical letter substitution, and they expected that easy solve to mask it as a love card. The signatures and address section map a trail to the heart shaped lake there near the Moosic Lakes area. The rotation of the card will line up the T shaped (T is an O, T is an Eldorado) trail across a path to the end where an X in the script of the letters Mr. will lead to the final point. Something buried as a drop. Possibly loot.

    I am a resident of Pennsylvania, and the area in question I have driven by a number of times.

    Tobias wrote earlier that the “Moosie Lake” appears to be either a typographical error or an alternative spelling.

    However, there are 365 Google search results for the quoted phrase “moosie lake” including this 1954 legal court case https://cite.case.law/pa/378/616/

    That document refers to a “a corporation of the second class, known as Moosie Lakes, Inc.” so appears to be a valid legal entity, so not a typo.

    Mr. John F. Wills (Signature appearing exactly same mentioning the company)

    1908 – Ford enters into overseas manufacturing in Paris to prepare for WWI. He is instructed by this cipher to double the Air Force’s capacity and power using his engines. He later goes onto form the same pre-alliance with Germany in WWII. The Roosevelt Death Card sent in 1935, also from Yardley, was the key to that affair, preparing their cabal for the coming wars.

    @ Tony: I wouldn’t say the spelling “Moosie” doesn’t exist, however the majority of postcards depicting obviously the same bridge call it “Moosic”. 🙂

    The compilation of embedded steganos and hints/guides to the secondary layers are found in the link along with the signatures of Herbert Osborne Yardley from the American Black Chamber.

    They accompany the other Roosevelt Death Card cipher he made regarding troves of caches from the eras of the KGC operations that developed a network of Underground Treasuries.

    The propping up of ciphers in this manner identifies the culprits as part of a growing network of partisans in the affairs leading to WWI and WWII.

    Using the Ford Motor Company as a manufacturer they strengthened the French Air Force in preparation for the war with Germany.

    @Tobias Schrödel would this stamp placement and interpretation make you more inclined to call this more than a simple love letter?

    @Klaus what would the Zodiac have to do with this cipher card ?
