HistoCrypt 2022 in Amsterdam: Mark your calendar, submit your contribution!

Next year there should finally be a real HistoCrypt again. The call for papers is open.

Deutsche Version

HistoCrypt, Europe’s leading crypto history event, has also suffered from the Corona pandemic. After having a great conference in Mons (Belgium) in 2019, we had to cancel the 2020 edition. In 2021, there was at least a slimmed-down online edition. By the way, the associated conference proceedings still appeared in both cases.

HistoCrypt 2022

In 2022 things will be different again. From June 20 to 22, a full-fledged HistoCrypt will take place again in Amsterdem (Netherlands). The website for the conference is here. The local organizing committee is chaired by my Dutch friend Karl de Leeuw.

The Call for Papers for HistoCrypt 2022 has recently been published. The deadline for submissions is January 23, 2022, and the program committee, headed by Carola Dahlke from the Deutsches Museum in Munich, will select the best submissions by the end of March. Incidentally, there is also the possibility of submitting a workshop proposal. In recent years, however, hardly anyone made use of this.

I myself will not submit a contribution, as I am not allowed to do so as chairman of the Steering Committee. However, I plan to submit this item at the next Business Meeting (this will be held during HistoCrypt). Anyone interested in doing so, please feel free to contact me.

Previous HistoCrypts

The HistoCrypt has a history that now goes back nine years:

  • In 2012, I organized a meeting of crypto history enthusiasts in Heusenstamm near Frankfurt. Our main guest was the legendary David Kahn. The following video was made at that event:

  • In 2016, Arno Wacker and his team hosted the European Colloquium on Historical Ciphers (Euro HCC) in Kassel.
  • In 2017, another EuroHCC took place in Smolenice (Solvakei),. It was the first event in this series that included a call for papers. The participants decided to change the name of the conference to “HistoCrypt”. This choice was made because the suffix “crypt” is very popular for crypto conferences. Examples include Eurocrypt, Asiacrypt, Indocrypt, and Netcrypt.

  • The first conference, titled “HistoCrypt,” was held at Uppsala University in Sweden in 2018. There is a video about this as well:

  • HistoCrypt 2019 was held in Mons, Belgium. The following video was made there:

  • The 2020 edition of HistoCrypt was supposed to take place in Budapest, but it was cancelled due to Covid-19.
  • HistoCrypt 2021 was only available as an online event.

Of course, I hope that next year’s HistoCrypt will work out and I am looking forward to it. I also hope to meet many Cipherbrain readers there.

If you want to add a comment, you need to add it to the German version here.
