The longest encrypted inscription in the world

In Marina di Pisa, Italy, there is an inscription 280 meters long. Part of it is readable, the rest may be encrypted. Can my readers solve this mystery?

Deutsche Version

I have already reported about my trip to Pisa last week. Probably my friend Paolo Bonavoglia and I were the only tourists who visited this city not because of the Leaning Tower, but because of three coded inscriptions. Thanks to the advice of my readers, we now know what these cryptograms from the Middle Ages mean.

The day after – Paolo had left in the meantime – I spent a few hours in the suburb of Marina di Pisa, where a stormy sea could be observed that day. To my great surprise, I discovered a (possibly) encrypted inscription there as well.

From now on I will refer to this inscription as the Marina di Pisa cryptogram. It is longer than all other encrypted inscriptions known to me together. And it is not mentioned in any literature source as far as I know. The solution (if there is one) is not known to me. Of course, I have included the Marina di Pisa cryptogram in the Cryptologic Travel Guide.

The inscription on the floor

The inscription in question is on the floor of a boardwalk at the Marina di Pisa marina. On Google Maps, you can see that the sequence of letters is about 280 meters long.

Part of the inscription is written in plain text. This refers to the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio (1863-1938), who worked in Marina di Pisa and wrote his poem “La pioggia nel pineto” here.

However, this plain text makes up (roughly estimated) only about half of the track. The rest consists of sequences of letters with no discernible meaning. Here is an excerpt:

In addition to letters, numbers, dots, and question marks also appear in the Marina di Pisa cryptogram.

The video

The following video shows the entire inscription:

What is behind it?

Is the Marina di Pisa cryptogram a coded message? Or did the paving contractor merely string together one letter string after the other without a plan? I don’t know.

I am not aware of any source so far that mentions this inscription. Accordingly, there is no transcription so far. I also don’t know the exact content of the plaintext so far.

Can any reader say more about this puzzle?

If you want to add a comment, you need to add it to the German version here.
